At Langwater Farm, in order to produce high-quality organic vegetables, fruits, and flowers, we rely on having a strong, trustworthy, competent crew.   We are looking for dedicated, hardworking farm crew members to be involved in all aspects of production and marketing, including planting, weeding, harvesting, washing and packing vegetables, and selling produce at farmers’ markets and our farmstand.

Please note that while it can be very rewarding, farm work is also tough– it is physically demanding, with a fast pace and long hours outside in all kinds of weather, including hot, cold, and rainy weather.

We are looking for workers who are:

• Experienced in production agriculture and field work
• Responsible, reliable and trustworthy
• Hard workers, physically strong and able to keep up with a fast pace
• Quick learners, able to follow directions and learn new tasks
• Personable with a good attitude and enjoy interacting with customers and farm visitors
• Have a valid drivers license
• Interested in agriculture, food and farming

Current Openings for September 2013:

Farmstand Crew

Position Description: 4-5 days/week key sales and service position at the busy farmstand of a small, diversified, certified organic family farm. Starts in May and runs through late December.  Applicants must be available to work until late December.

Responsibilities & Essential Functions: Tuesday – Sunday position is chiefly responsible for customer service and culinary advice, as well as display management. Reliability and trustworthiness, with a cheerful, engaging personality and a love of vegetables are all essential. The crew member’s duties include opening and running all farmstand sales and distribution operations, washing, packing, stocking produce, and closing up for the day.

Qualification Requirements:
a. Skills & Experience: excellent customer service skills; a love of vegetables and cooking; the ability to multitask the various aspects of our multifaceted distribution system.

b. Physical demands are a major part of this position and are: ability to lift 40 lbs to waist height frequently throughout the day; ability to work outside in all weather, as well as in a farmstand building that is not climate controlled; ability to work in an environment that is often dirty, dusty and/or muddy and wet.

Special consideration will be given for general knowledge of agricultural and food system issues and an aesthetic eye or drawing ability.

Field Crew

Position Description: Full time position runs mid April to late December (appx. 40-50 hrs/wk) with part time work available January to April.

Responsibilities & Essential Functions: Working in the greenhouse (filling pots, seeding), transplanting in the field, weeding, harvesting, washing & packing produce for distribution.

Qualification Requirements:
a. Skills & Experience: strong work ethic, work well with others, ability to work independently and productively, attentive to detail

b. Physical demands are a major part of this position and are: ability to lift 50 lbs frequently throughout the day; ability to work outside in all weather, and in an environment that is often dirty, dusty and/or muddy and wet.

Field Crew Manager/ Equipment Operator

Position Description: Full time, year round position.  April-October (50-70 hrs/wk, 5-6 days/wk).  November-March (30-50 hrs/wk, 4-5 days/wk).

Responsibilities & Essential Functions: Managing crews, weeding, transplanting, harvesting, washing & packing.  Operating power tools and heavy equipment including loaders and tractors.  Tractor work will include tillage, cultivation, planting, and spraying.  Other jobs will include building and repairing farm infrastructure.  This job will require the applicant to wear many hats and think on their feet.  Attention to detail is very important.  During the height of the season, a full commitment to the farm is necessary.

Qualification Requirements:

Skills & Experience: At least one year experience on a vegetable farm is required.  Applicant must also have experience managing people and operating equipment.  Training for specific jobs (tilling, cultivating, planting, spraying) can be done on the job, but some familiarity is important.  Important skills include the ability to communicate clearly, work well with others, and possess a strong work ethic.
