CSA for 2012 Season

It’s time to sign up for the 2012 CSA! After lots of enthusiasm about all the different CSA options last season, we’re offering them all again: main season Whole Shares & Half Shares, flexible Farmstand CSA cards, beautiful bouquets in the Flower CSA, and hearty comfort food in the Winter CSA. Plus we’ll be back in Dorchester for the Ashmont/Peabody Square Farmers Market CSA. Download a sign up sheet here!

This season we’ve added another pickup day at the farmstand–Thursday–for a total of four options: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday. Again this year the main season CSA (Whole Shares & Half Shares) will run for 24 weeks and start in mid-May. The Whole Shares & Half Shares will finish up the last week of October, and then the Winter Share begins the first week of November with delicious winter squash, sweet root vegetables, and crisp winter lettuce. The 8-week long Winter Share finishes up the 3rd week in December.

The flexible Farmstand CSA is a debit card loaded with $400 to use all season long for any item–vegetable, fruit, honey, flowers, baked treats–at the farmstand. Ten weeks of fresh, fragrant, farm-grown flowers in hand-tied bouquets starts with pastel snapdragons in early July and runs through colorful dahlia season in September.

During these short, frosty January days we’ve been dreaming about ripe, juicy tomatoes, sweet and buttery corn, delicious early spring broccoli, and tender and sweet spring onions. But as mouthwatering as those daydreams are, we haven’t just been dreaming. We’ve finished up taking inventory of our seed stocks and started work on crop planning and seed ordering for the upcoming season. Soon we’ll be getting large boxes full of colorful seed packets delivered to the front porch and we’ll be one more step closer to enjoying a ripe and juicy melon on a bright, sunny August afternoon.

Fall Fun on the Farm

The weather is getting a little cooler, the days are getting shorter, and fall is in the air. Here at Langwater Farm, we’ve been enjoying the sunny days between the rainstorms, bringing in the harvest of winter squash, roots, and greens, and planting winter crops in our high tunnels.

This October we will be spending our weekends giving free hayrides through our farm to the pick-your-own-pumpkin patch. Come by on a Saturday or Sunday to check out the farm from the hay wagon, and choose out your own fall pumpkins. We will also be open and doing hay rides on Monday, October 10 for Columbus Day to give the kids a chance to visit the farm on their break from school!

What’s fresh at the farmstand?

We have all kinds of fall deliciousness at the farmstand right now, including sweet and hearty winter squash (butternut, acorn, delicata, kabocha, buttercup and sweet dumpling) and lots of roots like potatoes (including fingerlings and blue potatoes!), beets, carrots, turnips, and radishes. Salad greens are back, including lettuce, arugula, and spinach, and we have gorgeous cooking greens as well: chard, kale, and collards. Come by soon to enjoy the last of the summer goodies: sweet peppers, eggplants, tomatoes, and hot peppers. And we have a great array of delicious apples from Brookfield Farm: Macintosh, Cortlands, and Macouns.

And of course, don’t forget PUMPKINS! And all the other farmy fall decorations: mums, corn stalks, and decorative gourds of all sizes, small and large (many of which are actually delicious as well!). Fall is a beautiful and abundant time on the farm– come by to see for yourself!

Sweet Summer Flavors on the Farm

Summer on the farm is officially delicious. We’ve been loving the melon harvest: orange canteloupes, green galia melons, honeydews, yellow canary melons, pink and yellow watermelons– all have been super sweet and full of the best flavor of summer. The tomatoes are pouring in, too: from perfectly ripe red beauties to the funky, knobbly, multicolored heirlooms with their fantastic flavors. They’re sweet and delicious, great with pasta, made into salsa, or just sliced on top of some good bread with a sprinkle of salt. We have fantastic cucumbers, great for cool summer salads or pickling. Plus, we have our own delicious organic sweet corn. And plenty of other veggies: onions, garlic, basil, beets, new potatoes, green beans, wax beans, eggplants, green bell peppers, sweet yellow and orange peppers, plus our own organic strawberries. Not to mention beautiful bouquets fresh every day! Come by to see what we have– it changes all the time.

It’s definitely feeling like summertime here at Langwater Farm! The sunflowers are blooming and we’ve just started picking our early tomatoes. We also have delicious sweet corn from Cervelli Farms in Rochester, MA and blueberries from Ward’s Berry Farm in Sharon, MA these days. And, of course we have plenty of our own organic produce, including the first of the tomatoes, basil, zucchini, summer squash, green beans, new potatoes, carrots, beets, spring onions, chard, kale, lettuce, cucumbers, Chinese cabbage, bok choy, fennel, and more. Spring is turning to summer

Today is the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, and we sure have been keeping busy here on the farm with harvesting, planting, weeding, and tending the crops as spring turns into summer.

Our farmstand shelves are bursting with delicious fresh produce these days: lettuce and radishes for your salads, bok choy and snow peas for your stir-fries, and baby carrots and sugar snap peas for your snacks. Plus beautiful red and golden beets, colorful rainbow chard, green and golden zucchini, several varieties of kale, huge heads of spring broccoli, early greenhouse cucumbers, sweet spring onions, and more– our offerings change every day depending on what’s in season in our fields. We are still getting some beautiful strawberries in, but the season is winding down (soon to switch over to blueberries!) so come by this week to enjoy the last of the berries for the spring.

We also have recently welcomed some new members to our farm family: six beautiful chickens! We’re very happy to have such sweet, friendly hens, and they’ve been doing a great job eating bugs and laying eggs. Come visit the chickens next time you’re at the farm.

And last but not least we’d like to invite you to join us at ourMid-Summer Farm Celebration on July 16! Join us and Land For Good, a nonprofit organization that works to preserve active farmland in New England, for an evening featuring a delicious casual dinner made from our own produce, along with wine and hay rides.

Wow, it’s June already! It’s been busy lately on the farm, and with the beautiful early-summer weather we’ve been able to get a lot of work done. We’ve been planting like crazy, and have gotten almost all of our tomatoes in the ground, along with peppers, eggplant, melons, cucumbers, and other goodies. Meanwhile, as we get all the summer veggies in the ground, we’re picking some delicious spring treats these days. We have lettuce, salad greens, radishes, Hakurei turnips, and kale at the farmstand right now, and we are expecting to have peas, baby beets, and chard before too long. With all the heat and sun, everything is growing fast, and our produce at the farmstand is changing all the time- come visit us to see what we have!

In late May we had a fantastic outdoor yoga class at the farm, taught by Liza of Easton Yoga Center.

Our farmstand is now officially open for the season! Stop by any time we’re open (Tues-Sun, 10 am – 6 pm) for some delicious fresh organic lettuce, arugula, spinach, chard, radishes, chives, and mesclun mix.

Planting a garden? We’ve got herb seedlings- chives, basil, thyme, oregano, sage, parsley, cilantro, and dill- as well as tomatoes of all sorts, summer squash, broccoli, and more. Plus we have cute little herb gardens in terra cotta and ceramic pots, along with patio tomato planters.

And of course we have some special treats.. freshly baked rhubarb bars and gorgeous fragrant lilacs!

We’ll be open Saturday and Sunday from 10 am – 6 pm, and after that, we’re open every day except for Mondays, 10 am – 6 pm for the rest of the season. Looking forward to seeing you at the farmstand!

Spring has sprung!

It is most decidedly springtime here at Langwater Farm! We’ve been planting like crazy over the past few days: lettuce, strawberries, spring onions, leeks, peas, radishes, carrots, beets, spinach, arugula, and the very first of the early summer squash and tomatoes. The light rains have been keeping everything nicely watered. We have two pairs of bluebirds each building nests in our bluebird boxes, and the peaches we planted last year are blooming on the hillside.

Upcoming Events

As the veggies grow bigger each day, we’re making plans for several springtime events. First we have our Farm Stand Opening on Saturday, May 14 from 10 am to 6 pm. We’ll have our own fresh organic veggies, along with organic herb and vegetable seedlings. This year we will be open every day but Monday, from 10 am to 6 pm. We’re also looking forward to the start of CSA pickups, which will begin the week of May 23.

On Saturday, May 28, join us for some Farm Yoga with Liza Keogh of Easton Yoga Center. From 10 am – 12 pm, Liza will lead an outdoor yoga class and meditation followed by a farm fresh lunch featuring Langwater Farm fresh produce. Stay afterward for some rock picking! Registration is $25, with part of proceeds going to Easton Food Pantry. Reserve your spot by emailing langwaterfarm@gmail.com .

Join us the next day, Sunday May 29, for a Farm Tour and Benefit for Easton Food Pantry. 1 pm – 2 pm. Take a walking tour of the farm to see and taste what spring has to offer. Sliding scale donation $5-20, with all proceeds going to Easton Food Pantry. No reservations necessary, just show up with comfy walking shoes.

And on Tuesday, June 7, we’ll have an evening presentation, Organic Food with a Budget Friendly Attitude with Kristi Marsh of Choose Wiser. A strolling evening presentation on how to feed yourself and your family genuine, organic foods. $10 includes light farm refreshments. Reserve your spot by emailing langwaterfarm@gmail.com .

Spring is here

Happy Spring!

The weather’s still a little up and down, but here at Langwater Farm, our spring preparations are well under way and we are seeing signs of spring everywhere. Some highlights:

–The seedlings are growing strong. Right now, our greenhouse is home to thousands of healthy baby plants, including onions, broccoli, lettuce, peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, herbs, flowers, and more. They’re soaking up the light as the days get longer, and awaiting the day they’ll get planted out in our fields.

Rhubarb is growing back after the winter

–Perennials are coming back. The chives and rhubarb are starting to poke their way up out of the soil. As second-year farmers this is exciting, since this marks our first spring of seeing our perennial plants grow back.

–We finished one of our new unheated hoop houses up above the post office on Main Street, and planted lettuce in it. The hoop house will protect the small plants from cold and inclement weather, and will give them a jump on the season, meaning we’ll have tasty lettuce earlier this spring.

–Critters are out and about around the farm– lately we’ve seen turkeys strolling, bluebirds flitting, and huge flocks of robins gorging on grubs in freshly turned dirt.

It feels great after such a snowy winter to see the fresh green color of healthy plants growing. Hope you’re seeing signs of spring as well!
